Nineteen59 Community Summer internship

Nineteen59’s summer internship is a platform and an initiative to strengthen and unify our community through inspiring the younger generation. This internship supports in bringing creative outlets into our community, while increasing the professional and developmental skills of Tibetan youth. Each year the various cohorts activate community action, engagement and bring a new lens to community building. We continue to see the impact in our community through the growth of involvement and community initiatives that have been introduced. We encourage youth to continue to stay involved, connected and take action.

2025 Cohort: Meet Rinchen

Tashi Delek!

My name is Rinchen Kalsang, and this summer I interned with Nineteen59 Community Development Intern. From managing social media and budgeting to organizing our Matchmaking Career Event, Seniors Trip, and Nyilam, my role allowed me to be deeply involved in projects that strengthen our community. This experience reminded me how powerful it is when youth step up, whether it’s giving back, reconnecting with our roots, or building new connections. I encourage other young Tibetans to get involved with Nineteen59 or similar initiatives. It’s not just about volunteering, it’s about preserving our culture, supporting each other, and making a real impact.

2025 Cohort: Meet Emma

Growing up away from Parkdale and Etobicoke, I always felt a gap between me and my Tibetan community in Toronto. Acha Tenwang, the founder of Nineteen59 Community, helped me bridge that gap. From youth leadership training 3 years ago to becoming the Operations Supervisor this summer, I have seen how Nineteen59 creates a precious third space for us to connect with other young Tibetans, encouraging youth to apply our academic experiences in grassroots work, and build a wealth of social skills and connections that you can only gain from working in your own community. What I will never forget about this internship was the feeling of attending Lhakar in Parkdale for the first time and seeing so many of our youth gorshey-ing with friends, and seeing people smiling and talking, enjoying an event you planned end-to-end for weeks. In every community event we design, promote, and take part in, every connection built with each other, every story we share, and every Tibetan word spoken by our elders and understood by our amazing youth volunteers, I see the powerful legacy of a seed that was planted over six decades ago, in 1959. Us Tibetans in exile have come so far, and it is an honour to work with Nineteen59 Community to build a bridge towards the incredible potential still ahead.

2024 Cohort: Meet Kunsel

All good things come to an end. It has been a great summer working here at Nineteen59 Community. Every single day coming to work has been a learning experience for me  from meeting strong community leaders to organising community events for all age groups. The Highlight for me this summer was our Elders trip which made me think about how lucky we are to have them. Moving forward on my career path in becoming a law enforcement officer I will take all these experiences for our community development. I would definitely recommend this internship to people who are interested in learning and enjoying.  In the end I thank my team Momo and Accha Tenwang for this great summer !!!!!!

2024 Cohort: Meet Sangmo/Momo

Tashi Delek! Hello,

My name is Sangmo Tenzin but I go by Momo :)

This was my second summer interning at Nineteen59 Community as I have always believed that our goals and values aligned. My position was Marketing Coordinator, where my role mainly consisted of promoting all events and projects facilitated by Nineteen59 Community. This 8-week internship has allowed me to learn and apply business savvy skills to my role such as outreach, branding, creating social media posts and building community connections. My favourite part about this internship was creating recap posts such as the senior trip highlights, Lhakar tabling and Nyilam party recap because while editing, it made me reflect on the events and really see all aspects of the outcomes. I am grateful that I had the opportunity once again to spend my two months of summer with a great team and supportive members of the Tibetan community. Moving forward, I am hoping to continuously stay active with Nineteen59 Community and take part in their work.

2023 Cohort: Meet Sangmo/Momo

Tashi Delek! Hello, My name is Sangmo Tenzin but I go by momo :) My pronouns are she/her. I was the Community Development Coordinator for Nineteen59 this summer.Since 2021, I have been an active volunteer for Nineteen59, mainly because I truly admire the work they put out for the community. As someone who lives far from Parkdale or also known as “Little Tibet”, I often found myself in positions where it was difficult to connect with my people. However, this internship allowed me to spend my two months of summer with the most amazing team and supportive members of the Tibetan community.

I believe that it is a privilege for me to be Tibetan and my time here at nineteen59 has taught me that despite the distance, having that strong bond with my people is very important. My favourite part about this internship was the rich opportunities to connect with experiential individuals and learn in so many different ways. Examples include the Seniors Trip, #OurStories, Nyilam Party and many more. I am looking forward to volunteering for Nineteen59 and being a part of what they have prepared.

2023 Cohort: Meet Yeshi

My name is Yeshi Lhamo and I was the marketing coordinator for Nineteen59 this past summer.

This internship was a wonderful experience and I learned a lot about how the community works in exile. I entered this internship with an open mind and being open to the various experiences that this could entail. The most memorable part of the experience was the Seniors trip- where I gained a lot of insight from the wisdom that the elders passed down to me. I think that this was an insightful moment- shared between multiple generations.

I would definitely recommend this internship to other youth looking to connect with like-minded individuals who are open to learning and experiencing. Through this internship, I was able to connect with so many new individuals and tapped into a new network that I was not aware of before.
